Origins

This world was made by Phi, a Creator who was part of The Singularity. It was her first and only world; a creation she became so attached to that it consumed her entirely. In her last moments, she released two dragons to protect the world she loved so dearly, before fading away to become a part of it.

What remained of Phi became the "magic" of the world, travelling through everything along invisible roads.

Those that Live Here

In Phi's world, there are broadly three categories of being; fey, earthly, and draconic. Here's a quick run-down of what those categories are describing:

Fey
Beings made of magic. Including (but not limited to) faeries, merfolk, and spirits.
Earthly
Creatures made of flesh (and also most plants). Including (but not limited to) humans, and most animals.
Draconic
Folk descended from the dragons Phi created to protect it's world, inheriting their roles.

The lines between these categories isn't solid either; a dragon is primarily a custodian of Phi's world, a role that an earthly or fey creature can take up also. Earthly creatures can become fey, and fey folk can become earthly. Although somewhat uncommon, it's also possible for fey/earthly mixes to exist!

Magic

As described above, Phi acts as the kind of "origin point" of magic in the world.

Magic is an abstract and creative force that flows through the world and can be tapped into to do... well, to do lots of things! This is a somewhat soft system, so it's very possible for a character's use of magic to get quite wacky!! That said, in this setting magic-use is a learnt skill, so the vast vast majority of magic users will have specialised on some level.

Additionally, different types of being tend to approach magic differently:

Ancient draconic magic
Ancient draconic magics are largely related to fulfilling the dragons' original role of custodian, watchful and protective. This is where we get things like scrying, healing magic, and shielding magic from :)
Fey magic
Fey, by way of being made of magic, have a fairly unique relationship to it, one that often emphasises finding understanding, balance, and stability in its usage. This is where a lot of magic that changes (or appears to change) the world originates from.
Human magic
Human magic, being more newly developed, is some of the most varied! Since magic is usually less intuitive to them, it took them a while to discover it. Some would've learnt from fey, some from dragons, some from other humans, and others still learnt from their own experimentation.

Over time, different styles of magic learnt from and reacted to eachother, creating in turn new styles and innovations.
